About Tonya :
As a hair designer, I have learned that my job is to not just to make people look their best but also to help them feel their best. Throughout my 22 years in the beauty industry, I have been fortunate enough to train under and work for some well-known designers and hair care companies. Some of those companies include Bumble & Bumble , Benniefactor, Goldwell, Schwarzkopf , Framesi, Redken , Crew, Paul Mitchell, Matrix, TIGI, Pivot Point, Logics, and Wella. Artists I have trained with include Michael Gordon (B&B), Michael Cole (Redken), Mario Tricoli, Albie w/John Sahag (Sahag), Robert Cromeans (Paul Mitchell), Beth Menedi (Redken), Wayne Grund (Grund Haircare), among many others.
My most memorable experience was training and educating under Wayne Grund Design. It was with that company, that as an educator, I perfected my hairshaping skills by not just utilizing, but understanding my favorite tool, the razor. Razor cutting allows me to perform true individual sculpting and shaping of the hair by rendering a more artistic and personalized approach to hair design. Although I believe that all tools have their advantages, my love for razor cutting drives my passion for delivering an inspired, functional, yet personalized cut. I believe, by combining current hair color trends with a personalized haircut, clients trully enjoy personalized looks without the fuss. I incorporate all tools available to me and use exceptional judgement as to which tool will best achieve the desired results.
My clientele remains diverse in scope: classic to edgy, shophisticated to trend setting, as well as young to the young at heart. My experience has lead me to the fact that some like change every visit and some will want consistant looks thoughout a decade. My philosophy is that to in order to stay on top, one must be open to learning and embracing new trends. Thankfully, that is the very element of this business that keeps me excited. I know I must deliver something to each client that they can not get someplace else. I trully get to know each client not only because it is part of my job but as years go by, I realize my job is to match hairstyle trends with the current lifestyle of each individual client, which means discovering their specific needs according to where they are in their course of life.
This means appreciating and becoming inspired by various cultures, art, and lifestyles. Albeit, what trully inspires me are shapes, colors, and personalities. Art, in any form, inspires me to step outside the box when given the opportunity, and to apply that inspiration by delivering uplifting styles that are acheivable everyday.
Diversity also keeps me in touch with current trends and fuels my right brain to embellish clients with assurance that they always have options. I look for aspects of an individual's lifestlye to inspire a "new look" that will actually "work" for them. Whether it is eye color, skin tone, or facial shape, I ask questions that are relevant to not only your personal hair style goals and suggest styles that will be functional for one's lifestyle. As a coiffeuse, my persona is a collage of Cool, Collective, Chic, Cognitive, Current, Creative, Confident, and Consistent. In other words ,"It"s all about how how we C."- Tonya Michelle, hair designer, Nashville, Tennessee.
